This course aims to engage students in practical activities that enhance creativity in writing. It introduces students to the fundamental concepts of creative writing and storytelling. This course focuses on the emergence of mass communication and the social transformations it has produced. Topics include the concept and development of mass communication, the historical evolution of mass communication research, liberal and critical approaches, media’s ideological and cultural functions, media sociology, news and reality, identity and representation in media, globalization and consumer society, internet and participation, media and democracy, and media and gender. This course examines the theoretical dimensions of the interaction between mass communication and social, political, and cultural structures. Concepts such as mass psychology, consumer society, popular culture, mass culture, the Frankfurt School, public sphere, information, power, ideology, liberalism, structuralism, post-structuralism, modernity, and post-modernity are discussed. The course also addresses mass communication models, the digital restructuring of communication, and cultivation theory, focusing on the social effects of television. This course is designed to teach research methods, concepts, and techniques. This course analyzes mass communication from a legal perspective. Laws applied in the TRNC, Türkiye, and worldwide are examined comparatively. This course introduces international human rights in both theory and practice. The emergence of human rights, their national and non-governmental dimensions, and their relationship with journalism are examined through published news. The skills and competencies gained are directly related to SDG 5.

Popular culture is examined as the culture of modern capitalist societies. The role of media—particularly radio and television—in circulating popular culture is emphasized. Throughout the semester, students analyze popular culture through affirmative and critical perspectives, focusing on concepts such as modern society, post-modernism, mass culture, and the culture industry. This course emphasizes the necessity of using research techniques in journalism and maintaining close follow-up of news stories. Media ethics and the ethical rules journalists must follow are highlighted. This course provides information on the profit–loss structures of media organizations, management systems, and departments such as news, economy, personnel, and marketing. The effects of American and European economic conditions on Turkish media are examined, along with existing problems and proposed solutions. This course introduces computer and information systems. The aim of this course is to teach solutions to legal problems arising from the use of information technologies. IT law seeks to prevent harm to individuals caused by the misuse of digital networks.
