The Cyprus Press History Communes in GAU

Having written work and made investigations on the Turkish Cypriot Culture the author Harid Fedai, answered the question ‘what was our first newspaper?’ in the ‘Academic Commune’, held at the GAU Millennium Senate Congress Centre.

Fedai underlined in his speech, ‘if we were to look at some records in the year 1889, there is a newspaper named ‘Sadet,’ there are 16 issues, the founder is Mehmet Emin. But this newspaper is in the style of notices and announcements so it would be sensible to say that the first newspaper published was in the year 1891, ‘Zaman’.

Listing the Newspapers in a historical time line Fedai, underlined that ‘Kokonoz’, was the first Bizantine newspaper published in 1896.

The aim of this newspaper was to educate Turkish Cypriots, and the newspaper published after ‘Kokonoz’ was ‘Akbaba’ which is said to feature the rest of ‘Kokonoz’.

Fedai continued saying that in the 1930’s there wasn’t only one magazine, the ‘Istiklal’ newspaper has been a big step for us and includes a lot of literature. Fedai expressed that with in the 40’s there was an activation, ‘ women were not able to be seen in literature , because before this it was a shame for women to be seen in literature.’

The commune was watched carefully by the GAU rector assistant and education faculty dean Prof. Dr Oguz Karakartal and many students.
