GAU Faculty of Architecture seeks solution to the Problems of the Disabled

The GAU Departments of Architecture and Interior Architecture have examined the problems of the disabled on-the-spot with students making a visit to the Cyprus Turkish Orthopaedic Disability Association.

The visit was hosted by the Chair of the Association - Orkun Bozkurt, Vice-Chair - Günay Kibrit and members of the Association. The students were informed about the life styles and experiences of handicapped people in Cyprus. The visit demonstrated that disability is not an individual problem but rather a process evolved due to communal prejudice, obstacles designed in the physical environment and exclusion practices in the provision of social services.

Students shared their ideas with the members of the Association, initially as individuals and also as professionals, architects and interior architects on how to undertake obstacle practices. GAU reported that the State is obliged to fulfill its commitments on every aspect of life especially in shelter, transportation, education, health and work life, thus appropriate and equality based amendments must be regulated for all members of the community especially to handicapped individuals.

Furthermore the discussions resulted in the awareness of the necessity to produce relevant policies and the conducting of required controls and enforcements.
