Architecture and Urbanism Conference of Middle-East and Mediterranean Hosted by GAU

GAU has hosted the ‘Contemporary Architecture and Urbanism Conference’ in the Middle-East and Mediterranean with regard to the field of Architecture.

 

The conference entitled “Architectural and Urban Research, Education, and Practice in the Era of `Post-Professionalism” pioneered the discussion of the "Post-Professionalism" concept and entry of it into the architectural history literature for the first time in the world and actualized the publication and distribution of the first book on this topic.

 

The conference which presented 50 articles in 4 separate panels and 6 sections, was attended by Chancellor of the America Penn-State University Architecture School - Prof. Mehrdad Hadighi, England Sheffield University Lecturer and editor of the book “Spatial Agency” - Dr. Nishat Awan, known for her researches in the field of professionalism - Dr. Bilge İmamoğlu, Head of the Scotland Strathclyde Architecture Department and one of the founders of CAUMME - Prof. Dr. Ashraf Salama and one of the founders of CAUMME - Prof. Dr. Murat Soygeniş as guest speakers and performed presentations.

 

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hossein Sadri was selected as the Mediterranean and the Middle East Architecture and Urbanism Community Founding Board member.

 

In accordance with the decisions taken at forums and various meetings in addition to the conference, Prof. Dr. Ashraf Salama, Prof. Dr. Murat Soygeniş and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hossein Sadri were selected as AUMME (Architecture and Urbanism in the Mediterranean and the Middle East) Founding Board members. At the first meeting of the founding board held at Girne American University, it was decided that the 3rd CAUMME conference is to be held in Italy in 2016 and also a meeting is to be held in June 2015 in Istanbul with the participation of the Chairs of SAUMME (Schools of Architecture and Urbanism in the Mediterranean and the Middle East) and with the participation of a school in every country of the Mediterranean and Middle East, training of Architecture and Urbanism is to be addressed in this meeting.

 

Also in line with the decisions taken at the meeting, Girne American University Architecture Department was invited to the first meeting of SAUMME as a representative of Cyprus.

 

According to the statement of the Dean of GAU Architecture, Design and Fine Arts Faculty - Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hossein Sadri, Girne American University`s Architecture Department taking an active role in the international arena and its general acceptance are ensured by taking part in the founding board of AUMME and organizing the 2nd CAUMME.  Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sadri has specified that the actual success of the conference and meeting in GAU is despite all the political obstacles organizing a successful activity, by taking an international conference known worldwide for academically one step further, gaining the cooperation of over 20 countries and over 50 universities, and contributing to the further institutionalization of an academic organization which is newly established.  He expressed that it is a great honour being a part of the AUMME founding board with Prof. Salama and Prof. Soygeniş and stated that further expansion of AUMME and being operational in all countries and schools in the Mediterranean and Middle East, and developing close relations with the other academic communities and universities outside the region are the most important priorities of the Founding Board.
