Giving education under Girne American University’s (GAU) group of schools and conducting as the American College, the Principal and members of the Cyprus Turkish Education Community commemorated Salih Sonel’s untimely loss which occurred on 29th May 2011.  To commemorate his loss a 4th commemoration fencing tournament was held in the American College indoor sports hall.

The 4th Salih Sonel Commemoration Fencing Tournament where Salih Sonel’s wife and son were present was held at the American College Kyrenia Campus Sports Hall.   TRNC President of the Fencing Federation - Erhan Vechi in his statement reported that day by day fencing has an increasing interest and with being the season’s opening tournament, it was very important and carried out under the intense interest of the audience. This activity being entirely from amateur spirit, he expressed its great significance in terms of the development of the sport.

Successful athletes in the tournament received their trophies and medals from GAU Head of Culture and Sports - Türkay Akpınar, the late Salih Sonels wife Yeşim Sonel, his brother Arif Sonel, TRNC Fencing Federation President - Erhan Vechi and TRNC Fencing Federation Secretary General - Ömer Aydın.
