GAU Discussed The Urban Reconstruction In Post-Conflict Cities

‘’Architecture Friday Seminars’’ which has been coordinated by Girne American University (GAU) Faculty Of Architecture, Design and Fine Arts and by the main topic of Architecture Facing World Problems, continued with the Urban Reconstruction In Post-Conflict Cities: The Case Of Mostar themed seminar.


Dr. Francesco Mazzucchelli the lecturer of the University of Bologna andwho is a researcher at Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences have attended seminar, which was held open to public, as a spokesperson held in Girne American UniversityCyprus-Girne Campus Millennium Complex Senate Congress Centre.


Non-governmental organizations, occupational institutions and establishments and also GAU students have showed great attention on the seminar where the rising ambient of conflict and the methods which was implied to those sites of post-conflict cities during the modern centuries methods’ relations between cities’ social structures, cultural and more importantly memory and remembrance been analyzed through the human rights focused sample of Mostar.

Dr. Mazucchelli pulled attention to the issue of social memory during the period of urban reconstruction and also underlined the social and political sides of the reconstruction of the pro-conflict urban areas. Analyzing the methods implied for the reconstruction of the pro-conflict urban sites due to the rising trend of the conflict ambient in the urban areas in recent century, Dr. Mazucchelli also emphasized the pre-mentioned methods’ relation with the urban people in means of social structures, cultural and most importantly memories and remembrances.


Dr. Mazzucchelli underlining that he must act selective on every restoration and reconstruction period in means of memory, and added on as saying that all reconstruction projects are social and political projects. Dr. Mazzucchelli also emphasized that there is yet an ongoing cultural conflict in the Yugoslavia during the pro-conflicts and reconstruction period and also shared the exemplary of Mostar and the studies he leads via handling the reconstruction of Mostar city as a focus point with the participators.


Realizing the spatial studies via the spatial anthropologist perspective with a human focused approach Dr Mazzucchelli also stated that he is monitoring the ambience of research and actual education of GAU Architecture, Design and Fine Arts Faculty with an excitement and yet he is also looking forward to cooperate more in the common basis in the future.


Beside of the faculty members from various departments of the university and students also participants from occupational sector showed great attention to the seminar. Vice Dean of GAU Architecture, Design and Fine Arts Faculty Assist. Prof. Dr. Hossein Sadri presented the plaquet of appreciation to Dr. Mazzucchelli at the end of the seminar.
