GAE "The Reason For “NO” To The Constitutional Amendment Is Ignorance"

Established within GAU, The Kyrenia Research Institute defined the cause of the people’s rejection of the constitutional amendments submitted to referendum on June 29, 2014 as "ignorance".

In the "Why did the TRNC public say “no” to the constitutional amendment" entitled research performed by GAE, the most crucial question was "What do you think the reason was that the people said ”no” to the constitutional amendments?".  52.7%  of the participants responded to the question by choosing the option "The public didn’t exactly know what the amendments were".

In the public opinion polls performed by GAE, it was stated that prepared samples based on the TRNC constituency were used and a variety of questions and specific questions intended to shed light on the upcoming period related to the constitutional amendment was directed to the participants

The poll results obtained on 9th November 2014 by GAE were shared with the press with a press conference held at the Millenium Senate Congress Center.

The press conference was attended by GAU Vice Rector - Prof. Dr. Sadık Ülker, Head of the GAU Health, Culture and Sports Department - Türkay Akpınar, Vice Rector - Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zafer Ağdelen, GAU Secretary General - Assist. Prof. Dr. Sualp Davut, GAE General Coordinator - Hasan Erçika.  GAU Rector - Prof. Dr. Sadık Ülker stated in his speech that;

Ülker: “We Will Continue to Check the Pulse of People with Surveys as GAU”

"When we look at what is the purpose of the universities, I can say that they are education, research and social responsibility projects. As GAU we gave GAE the task to do research on the reason about a fact that is found to be a very interesting result in the TRNC.  As you know, our people said “no” to a constitutional amendment draft law that the whole council approved with a vote rate of 63%. The interesting thing here is that the public said “no” to something that the entire council said yes to. Hence, when I checked the results I saw interesting things. We will continue to keep the pulse of the public by making many surveys as GAU"  he said.

Giving information on the results of the survey and the public`s expectations The GAE Management Board Member - Erhan Vechi said the following;

“This is GAE’s third comprehensive research. Our aim was to investigate the reasons for this rejection. The scope was all settlements and neighbourhoods in the TRNC.  Survey was conducted with a total of 894 people. In our survey consisting of 3 parts we asked about:- at the first part - the democratic characteristics, at the second part - the attitudes towards the constitutional amendment, at the third part - political trends.  Around 35% YES, 65% NO came as a result. Very close to the results of the voting results that were revealed. However, no closer to election results in political trends, this part and this situation is really interesting, "he said.

In a statement made by the GAE General Coordinator - Hasan Erçıka he said the following;

"Multiple asked questions actually lead us to a common result. The survey remains within the margin of error but is actually giving healthy results. The survey should take into consideration the public`s expectations in the results. If the constitution needs to be changed it should be addressed with a greater responsibility because, if we remember the last process, on the eve of local elections by significantly politicizing a serious academic debate is considerably needed. The vote rate in the last elections hasn’t really changed much and actually in the last ten years the votes for the parties have been stable" he said.

Based on the survey result that was made after the referendum June 29, 2014, the reason for the rejection by the public of the new constitutional package was defined as "ignorance".

In this respect; the reason for saying "no" to the constitutional amendment at a rate of 52.7% is because  "The public didn’t exactly know what the changes were”,  the reason for them saying yes with a rate of 31.1% is because "The party they supported said so" was reported to occur in the result. During the decision-making at the referendum it is noticed that the media and social media affected the result with about a 21% and 20.7% rate and it came to the result that 70% of the public wants the constitutional amendments situation to come back to the agenda. It was stated that to the question of “How would you want the constitutional amendments and the voting to be” 42.2% of the puplic replied by saying “all of the options should be seperate” and 37.4% said “The constitution should completely be renewed and voted”.
