COURSE DESCRIPTIONS


CLL 101-102 Basic Chinese I-II (3-0-3)


Teaching the basic structure of Chinese Language. Teaching phonetics and four voice tones of the Chinese Language. Also, teaching typological characteristics of the phonetic system. Improving students’ accent in accordance to the Chinese phonetics. Teaching the Chinese alphabet.

CLL 103-104 Speaking I-II (3-0-3)


Studying dialogues in Chinese and rendering the students capable of their thoughts and emotions. Teaching the pronunciation of stressed, unstressed, long and short syllabes. Teaching techniques and methods of forming accurate sentence. Listening records of TV programs and develop the students’ skills of listening and understanding simultaneously.

CLL 105-106 Listening I-II (3-0-3)


Listening to the tapes at the level of basic Chinese and doing. Analysis of sentence structures, and improving the students’ ability of listening and understanding.

CLL 107-108 Basic writing I-II (3-0-3)


Writing compositions at the level of basic chinese, rendering the students capapabilities of articulating their thoughts and feelings in and through writing. Teaching the techniques and methods of writing Chinese characters, forming accurate sentence and writing composition.

EGL 101-102 English I-II (3-0-3)


Teaching English grammar, rendering students capabilities of articulating their thoughts and feelings through speaking dialogues. By writing compositions, improving the students capabilities of articulating their thoughts and feelings in written language. Improving the students’ skill of understanding of simultaneous English texts through listening. Students will be guided through the various stages of writing, including planning, researching and collecting and organizing information. Students will be working with semi-authentic to authentic academic texts. The course aims to introduce efficient reading strategies to cope with such texts as well as to increase students` confidence and comprehensibility when delivering information in an academic setting. Academic writing, listening, speaking and reading skills development will be emphasized in the course. Additionally, students` skills in paraphrasing, summarizing and note-taking will be developed.



COMP 103 Introduction to Computer (3-0-3)


This is an introduction course in computers and Information processing. Although it provides a comprehensive introduction, it is not overly technical. Coverage is given to both commercial and personal applications. The aim of this course is to provide the students with the necessary basic information to aid them in their course of study and future careers. Giving basic knowledge about computer and basic programs such as MS Word, MS Excel and MS Power Point Improving skills such as using word and excel, internet, web design. Ability of students about computer skills will be also improved by applied projects and workshops. Students will be able to create their own web pages and also will learn how to use social networking.


NH001-002 Principless of Atatürk and History of Revolution I-II (0-0-0)


The aim of this course is to teach students the meaning and significance of the Turkish Revolution. The main subject of the course is War of Independence. Meaning of the concept of revolution teaching of the difference between the Turkish revolution and other revolutions... The reasons behind the Ottoman Empire’s collapse, the republican period and the significance of Atatürk’s revolutions...


TURK 001-002 Turkish I- II (0-0-0)


The course is based on the study of Turkish grammar, the relationship between language and culture, spelling and spelling mistakes, punctuation marks, abbreviations, the study of word structure and the dictionary, types of literary writing, writing of book reviews, travel writing and creative writing. Basic grammar of Turkish and skills of articulating thoughts and feelings in writing and speaking will be learned. Several compositions will be written and stories will be read in order to enrich vocabulary of the students and improve their knowledge about the content and the grammar.

CLL 201-202 Intermediate Chinese I-II (3-0-3)


Teaching of more complicated sentences and their meanings. Teaching of Chinese language’s more complicated grammar and spelling qualities. Basic knowledge about the grammar of Modern Chinese will be learned systematically. Basic terminology and their usage such as noun, verb, adverb, subject etc will also be learnt. Also students writing and speaking skills will become to intermediate level as well as ability to analyze the grammatical mistakes by the end of the course.






CLL 203-204 Speaking III-IV (3-0-3)


The purpose of the course is to study of dialogues and rendering the students capable of articulating their thoughts and feelings at an advanced level. Specific subjects will be given to the students and will be expected to express themselves in advanced level of Chinese. Speaking and expressing themselves fluently is expected by the end of the course.

CLL 205-206 Reading and Comprehension I-II (3-0-3)


Reading Chinese texts at an Intermediate level, analyzing the grammar of the written materials will be learnt, as well as usage of words and content of these texts. Stories, myths, love stories and narratives will be read and analyzed.

CLL 207-208 Writing I-II (3-0-3)


Teaching Chinese grammar and sentence structure at an intermediate level is the purpose of the course. Writing compositions and increasing the ability of students in articulating their thoughts and feelings will be learnt.

CLL 213-214 Chinese Society and Culture I-II (3-0-3)


Knowledge about the Chinese culture, philosophy, education, politics, arts and history will be given to the students. Comparison between Chinese culture and Asian, Anatolian and West will be done during the course.

CLL 301-302 Advanced Chinese Reading I-II (3-0-3)


Teaching of more complicated signs, their meanings and their explanations in the way of advancing the students’ ability to comprehend sophisticated texts is the main purpose of the course.

CLL 303-304 Advanced Chinese Speaking I-II (3-0-3)


Using various forms of dialogue in the way of increasing the students’s ability to articulate more complicated thoughts and feelings. Audio recordings, short stories and dialogues will be analysed in the way of improving the students’ listening, comprehnsion and speaking skills.







CLL 305-306-407-408 Chinese Literature I-II-III-IV (3-0-3)


Involves general information about the Chinese Literature and analysis of various exemplary texts from Chinese Literature. Provers, sayings, epics, stories will be analysed in a comparative way. Selected stories from ancient Chinese literature will be analysed and translated.



CLL 307 Translation of Culture and Thought Texts (3-0-3)


Involves translation of texts from Chinese cultural and social sciences. Selected philosophical, scientific and literary texts will be interpreted and translated. Stories from ancient Chinese literature will be analysed and translated in the way of introducing the Chinese culture to students.

CLL 308 Special Field Translations (3-0-3)


Translation of texts from the fields of tourism, economy, international relations, law, education and politics. The grammar and sentence structure of the students will be developed by a comparative study of texts from the above mentioned fields.

CLL 401-402 Modern Chinese I-II (3-0-3)


Teaching of the sentence structures of chinese grammar and sentence structures. Writing compositions in the different subjects, rendering the students capable of articulating their thoughts and feelings.

CLL 403-404 Dissertation I-II (3-0-3)


Involves teaching of research techniques as well as the techniques of writing a thesis. During this period a thesis title will be determined and a graduation thesis will written. thesis.

CLL 405-406 Translation I-II (3-0-3)


Involves translation of texts selected from newspapers, magazines and journals from Chinese into English and from English into Chinese, as well as translation of texts from Chinese cultural and social sciences. Literary texts will also be interpreted and translated. Stories from ancient Chinese literature will be analysed and translated in the way of introducing the Chinese culture to students.

Accurate and in depth reading of Chinese texts chosen from newspapers and magazines. Analysis of sentence structures. Revealing the difference between newspaper and magazine languages in and through a comparative study of chosen texts.

CLL 409 Special Field Translation (3-0-3)


Translation of various Chinese texts from different fields like international relations, law, education and politics. A comparative study of Chinese culture and with other cultures by interpreting particular texts such as those mentioned above.

CLL 309 Chinese Philosophy and Art (3-0-3)


Involves studying the place and importance of Chinese philosophy in the history of philosophy. Teaching the philosophies of Tao and Confucius as well as a study of Chinese art with specific examples. Analysis of the development of artworks and philosophical thoughts throughout historical process, as well as a comparative study of these with the artistic and philosophical traditions of various other civilizations.

CLL 215 Chinese History (3-0-3)


Teaching the development of Chinese History from antiquity to the present day with specific attention on important events and individuals. Comparison of social, economical and intellectual developments in different ages of Chinese history. Interpreting important events that have occurred throughout the history of China and pointing out the influences of these on the countries around China. The analysis of the history of a rapidly developing China from the perspective of today.

Our department offers a four-year undergraduate program in Chinese Language and Literature, providing students with a bachelor's degree in this field. Our undergraduate program aims to equip students with all the essential knowledge in their respective disciplines and also incorporates interdisciplinary educational foundations to enable them to excel in their professions. The education program is designed to facilitate our graduates' specialization and involvement in creative research at the postgraduate level.

 Our Department aims to cultivate critical thinkers and problem solvers who continuously renew themselves both personally and professionally, show sensitivity towards nature, respect diversity, and contribute to science and art at a universal level. Besides its fundamental missions of fostering individuals with ethical values, social responsibility, and a consciousness of the country's issues, it also aspires to contribute to the development and progress of the city in which they live by providing services that prioritize public interest. In addition to these missions, the department aims to educate individuals who are knowledgeable in Chinese language, Chinese literature, Chinese culture, and Chinese history, possess a critical perspective, can establish connections between different fields and disciplines, and can apply their knowledge to various domains while upholding universal ethical values and maintaining a forward-thinking mindset. The curriculum is divided into ten semesters, including graduation theses within the same timeframe.

 

Enrolled students in the undergraduate program are required to complete a total of 126 credits, which consist of forty-six courses. Additionally, to complete the program, students must also satisfactorily pass non-credit Turkish and History courses.

1. They acquire knowledge and skills in the fields of Chinese language, Chinese grammar, Chinese culture, literature, philosophy, and history.

2. They gain proficiency in speaking, reading, writing, and listening in Chinese.

3. They develop an objective perspective on their own nation using their knowledge of the Chinese language, culture, and literature, and cultivate a universal consciousness. Additionally, they learn to respect different cultures and take pride in historical and cultural heritage.

4. They acquire the ability to gather current information and topics related to China from Chinese sources and analyze this information to share it with relevant individuals, institutions, and organizations.

5. They contribute with their knowledge of Chinese culture to the understanding of the relationship between the two countries.

6. They enhance their skills in reading and writing Chinese characters.

7. They develop the ability to take responsibility in accordance with business ethics.

8. They gain competence in reading and interpreting Chinese texts.

9. They acquire the skill of translating between Chinese and Turkish languages.

10.They evaluate the knowledge and skills they have acquired in their field with a critical approach and use them to solve problems within society.

11.They apply the theoretical and practical knowledge they have gained in their field to areas of education, research, and public service.

Faculty of Humanities, Chinese Language and Literature, Bachelor's Degree (230 ECTS).

 Upon successful completion and acquisition of the necessary qualifications of the Chinese Language and Literature Department, the student is awarded a bachelor's degree in the field of Chinese Language and Literature.

Graduates from the Department of Chinese Language and Literature have the opportunity to work in the following areas:

 Government Institutions: Such as the Prime Ministry, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Treasury and Trade, Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Culture, and other state institutions.

 Turkey-China Joint Investment Companies and Projects: They can take on roles in companies and projects that involve collaborations between Turkey and China.

Teaching and Education: After pursuing postgraduate education at universities, they can become instructors in universities or, with the necessary teaching qualifications, work as Chinese language teachers in primary and secondary schools affiliated with the Ministry of National Education (MEB). 

Aviation Companies: They can work for airlines in various capacities that require Chinese language proficiency.

Foreign Trade Firms: Graduates can find opportunities to work in companies engaged in foreign trade, where their knowledge of Chinese language and culture can be beneficial. 

Media Organizations: They can work as translators or interpreters in media companies that require Chinese language expertise.

Tourism Industry: Graduates can work as guides or interpreters in tourism-related businesses, facilitating communication with Chinese-speaking tourists.

The diverse skill set acquired during their studies in Chinese Language and Literature opens up various career paths for the graduates in both public and private sectors, fostering international relations and cultural exchange between Turkey and China.

Chinese language and literature education is an important discipline, especially for students who are interested in Chinese culture and wish to establish a profound connection with Chinese literature by learning the Chinese language. This education can be beneficial for both academic and personal purposes and can be pursued with a variety of objectives. Here are some of the aims of Chinese language and literature education:

1. Cultural understanding and appreciation: Chinese language and literature education provide a window to better understand and appreciate Chinese culture. Chinese literature has a history of thousands of years and has developed in different periods and regions. These literary works reflect Chinese history, thought systems, values, and ways of life. 

2. Communication and job opportunities: Chinese is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, and the Chinese economy is becoming increasingly important. Those who know Chinese may have better opportunities in the business world and trade and can communicate more effectively with Chinese business partners and customers.

3. Academic research: Chinese language and literature education form the foundation for academic research on Chinese culture, literature, and language. Chinese literature offers a broad field for research in social sciences, literary studies, and cultural studies.

4. Cultural exchange: Learning Chinese language and literature encourages cultural exchange and interpersonal interactions. Learning a language and studying literature can increase understanding and tolerance between different cultures

The Faculty of Humanities emphasizes the importance of using both traditional methods and modern concepts and techniques in the education and training of Chinese Language and Literature. In the Faculty of Humanities, attendance is mandatory for all courses except for the graduation thesis. Various teaching methods are employed, depending on the course and instructor. These methods include speaking, writing, and reading to better understand the theory and develop practical skills. Implementing different teaching techniques also helps to keep students engaged in the classes. Traditional classroom studies are necessary to provide fundamental theoretical knowledge on each subject. Therefore, at least 75% attendance is expected in all courses.

Since 2007, a course support system, which is a distance learning system, has been used. This system is accessible through the e-learning platform at Gau.edu.tr. It provides various opportunities for education and learning. Announcements about the courses are made through this system. Additionally, it enables students to engage in discussions with their instructors and peers on specific topics related to the course actively.

Moreover, this system reduces paper waste and ensures the equality and transparency of each student. Like many other social networking services, it allows all registered students and instructors of the course to see incoming messages. Therefore, it is a contemporary educational method used to communicate with students outside the classroom and plan activities. The usage of this system in the Faculty of Humanities varies depending on the course and instructor, but as its benefits are increasingly recognized and promoted by all instructors, its usage is growing and becoming more advantageous.

For students in the Faculty of Humanities to be eligible for graduation, they must have completed all the required courses, obtained the minimum credit hours specified by their department, submitted their graduation thesis, achieved a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher, and have no financial issues. 

The graduation status is conferred by the University Senate based on the recommendation of the relevant Faculty.

Diplomas are prepared by the Student Affairs office, and they include the name of the program completed, the graduation date, and the degree obtained.
