“Jurisdiction, Problems and HSYK (Supreme Board of Judges and Prosecutors)” was the topic of the themed conference organized by Girne American University (GAU) Faculty of Law and was held with the participation of the Supreme Court Honorary Chief Prosecutor - Sabih Kanadoğlu, Retired President of Supreme Court of TRNC - Taner Erginel and Constitutional Professor – Prof. Dr. Erdoğan Teziç.

GAU Rector – Prof. Dr. Yıldırım Öner who commenced the opening speech of the conference, which was held in GAU Spectrum International Congress Centre, thanked GAU Faculty of Law and Dean – Prof. Dr. Cevdet Atay for organizing an event like this and also thanked the Supreme Court Honorary Chief Prosecutor - Sabih Kanadoğlu, Retired Supreme Court of Cyprus President - Taner Erginel and Constitutional Professor – Prof. Dr. Erdoğan Teziç for their contributions. Öner stated that it is important to the students and of great significance to the TRNC that these important people, who were followed on television, were in GAU and noted that everyone needed to be enlightened from the Conference.

The Dean of the GAU Law Faculty – Prof. Dr. Cevdet Atay thanked the guests for their contributions and stated in his speech that the theme of the Conference - Jurisdiction, its problems and HSYK, focused on the process of judicial procedure.

The Conference was attended by a large number of students and the Constitutional Professor – Prof. Dr. Erdoğan Teziç emphasized in his speech that he had been a friend of Supreme Court Honorary Chief Prosecutor Sabih Kanadoğlu since the early years and the education system during that time. Teziç also underlined the essentials of a State of Law and emphasized that this must be integrated within the structure of the State of Law of the State.

Supreme Court Honorary Chief Prosecutor - Sabih Kanadoğlu mentioned in his speech of the process of İmralı and the relationship between the European Court of Human Rights, and stated that the judiciary should be processed independently from politics and, therefore, calling Turkey a State of Law would be wrong at this point. Kanadoğlu further stated about the jurisdiction process and jurisdiction corruption cases in Turkey and briefed the audience about the jurisdiction problems and functioning of the High Council.

Retired President of the Supreme Court of the TRNC - Taner Erginel stated in his speech that the judicial system which is applied in the TRNC is a system that should be taken as an example in the world and stated that there isn’t a Ministry of Justice in the TRNC, thus the judiciary and politics are separated from each other. Erginel stated that the judicial system in the TRNC is declining due to the errors made in applications even though the judicial system in the TRNC is a system that can serve as a model.

The GAU Rector – Prof. Dr. Yıldırım Öner presented the Supreme Court Honorary Chief Prosecutor - Sabih Kanadoğlu, Retired President of Supreme Court of TRNC - Taner Erginel and Constitutional Professor – Prof. Dr. Erdoğan Teziç with a plaque of appreciation and students received souvenir photographs taken with the guests at the end of the Conference.
