Eastern Mediterranean University 12th International Design Week
As representatives of the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Fine Arts at Girne American University (GAU), myself, Dr. Özge Luricinalı, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Doğa Üzümlüoğlu, participated in the 12th International Design Week hosted by Eastern Mediterranean University in May 2025. Together with a selected group of our undergraduate students, we conducted a three-day interdisciplinary workshop titled “In-Between: Exploring Transitional Spaces and Conceptual Dualities through Sculpture.”
The workshop focused on the conceptual and material investigation of liminal spaces, and relationships between opposing or complementary ideas, using papier-mâché as the primary medium. The structure of the workshop was as follows:
- Day 1: Conceptualization & Armature Construction
Participants explored theoretical frameworks around transitional spaces and binary relationships (e.g., light/shadow, rigidity/fluidity, nature/urban). They translated these concepts into physical form by sketching, discussing, and constructing armatures from cardboard and wire. - Day 2: Material Exploration
Students collaboratively applied papier-mâché techniques to their forms, experimenting with surface textures, volume, and modularity. The process emphasized tactile engagement, iterative development, and sculptural communication of abstract ideas. - Day 3: Finishing & Presentation
Participants completed their sculptures with color, pattern, and surface treatments. Each group presented their final work, followed by a reflective discussion on the creative process, conceptual interpretations, and collaborative experience.
Outcomes:
The workshop resulted in a series of expressive, medium-scale sculptures, each demonstrating a unique interpretation of the workshop theme. The final works exhibited a balance between conceptual depth and material sensitivity. In addition, students gained valuable experience in collaborative art-making, interdisciplinary design thinking, and spatial storytelling.
We were proud to represent GAU at this event and contribute to a dynamic academic exchange that fostered creativity, innovation, and inter-university collaboration.
