Girne American University Academics Participate in the 20th Ege University Cultural Studies Symposium
Academics from Girne American University participated in the 20th Cultural Studies Symposium organized by the Faculty of Letters at Ege University between May 6–8, 2026. Held under the theme “AI & Cultural Production,” the symposium brought together scholars from various institutions to discuss the growing impact of artificial intelligence on culture, literature, media, creativity, and global knowledge production.
Recognized as one of the oldest and most established cultural studies symposiums in Türkiye, the event provided an important interdisciplinary platform for academic exchange and critical discussions on contemporary cultural issues. Representing Girne American University for the first time at the symposium were academics from the Department of English Language and Literature.
Asst. Prof. Dr. Henrieta Krupa presented her paper titled “Who Speaks When AI Writes? Artificial Intelligence as Functional Trickster in Cultural Production.” The study explored the ways in which artificial intelligence functions as a disruptive and boundary-crossing figure within contemporary cultural production, challenging traditional notions of authorship, originality, and creativity.
Lecturer Zahra Iqbal presented her study entitled “Decolonising AI Creativity? Cultural Inequality, Global Knowledge Systems, and Non-Western Voices in AI-Driven Cultural Production.” Her presentation focused on issues of representation, cultural inequality, and the marginalization of non-Western perspectives within emerging AI technologies and digital cultural production.
The participation of Girne American University academics in this prestigious symposium reflects the university’s commitment to international academic engagement, interdisciplinary research, and contemporary debates in cultural and literary studies. Their contributions also highlighted the growing scholarly interest in the intersections of artificial intelligence, culture, and global knowledge systems.
