Interdisciplinary Discussion on “A Modest Proposal” Held at GAU

On 30 April 2026, Girne American University hosted an interdisciplinary discussion centered on Jonathan Swift’s A Modest Proposal. The event brought together faculty members and students from the English & Turkish Law Department and the American & English Language and Literature Department. The session took place between 15:00 and 16:30 and aimed to explore the satirical text through both legal and literary lenses.

Participants examined Swift’s work by addressing its socio‑political context, rhetorical strategies, and the implications of satire in relation to contemporary legal debates. The text was made accessible via the QR code featured on the event poster, and attendees were also able to listen to the work through its available YouTube recording.

The meeting was held in an informal academic atmosphere accompanied by tea and coffee, encouraging open dialogue and collaborative reflection. Contributions from students and academics across different disciplines enriched the discussion, highlighting the value of approaching legally relevant literary texts from multiple perspectives. All presentations and discussions were conducted in English, adding an international dimension to the session.

GAU continues to support interdisciplinary academic engagement, fostering environments where students can enhance their analytical, interpretive, and critical thinking skills.
