World Class Aviation and Maritime Education

In the 25th anniversary year, Girne American University continues to make new advancements to provide world class education with the Faculties of Maritime and Aviation. According to the statement made by GAU, it is very important to have practical experience besides the theoretical information and GAU provides both of them to the Aviation and Maritime Faculty students.

Required arrangements were made to do test flights on the island and new projects about making flights to the Canterbury Campus, on the agenda of the university. It was also emphasized that GAU students who graduated from the other undergraduate programmes have a chance to take pilot training for 18 months.

GAU’s Vice President Olgun Üstün, Rector Prof. Dr. Yıldırım Öner, the Rector of Piri Reis University, Prof Dr. Osman Kamil Sağ and the Vice Rector Prof Dr. Mahmut Calal Barla signed an academic cooperation agreement for the 2009-2010 academic year. As part of the agreement; teacher transfers, support and development programmes and an international maritime organisation IMO STCW will be set up. GAU’s cooperation with one of the most important universities in Turkey for maritime education is a great opportunity for students to get the best education. GAU also emphasized that the Turkish undersecretary for Maritime Affairs supports the project.

The Education Boat of Maritime Faculty gave students opportunity to practice simulation, radar, using the night vision device, reading the map and gave information about the deep-sea travel. In the statement related with the practice harbour, it was emphasized that will not only provide education field for GAU students but also a very important sub-structure for Northern Cyprus. With practising, GAU students will learn every single detail about maritime. Several education boats from 5 meters to 30 meters, will always available for GAU students to contribute their theoretic information with practising. After infrastructure works are completed, the Faculty of Maritime will be the first and best in Northern Cyprus
