“The 1st Psychology Days” that were held by the Girne American University (GAU) Psychology Department and in which psychology was discussed for 3 days ended. The students paid a lot of interest to the conference, which was held in GAU Cyprus Karmi Campus Millennium Senate Hall and which was presented by expert psychologists. Prejudices were pointed in the first day of the conference; “meeting with psychotherapies” was discussed in the second day, while “extortion” themed presentation was held on the third day. Underlining that the Psychology Days that were held for the first time were very beneficial, the psychologists planned to organize the event every year.
Dr. Alp Karaosmanoğlu: “People reject cognitive treatment”
Sharing his knowledge and experience on scheme therapy, one of the doctors of Istanbul Psikonet Psychotherapy Centre Alp Karaosmanoğlu touched on treatment methods designed for psychological diseases that have obvious sources in childhood and adolescence periods that are difficult to change. Stating that the people accepted physical development only and they rejected cognitive treatment, Karaosmanoğlu touched upon issues such as respect area, love and belonging, trust and narcissist.
Fatoş Bayraktar: “Child is aware of his problems; however doesn’t know how to solve”
Instructor of GAU Psychology Department Expert Psychologist Fatoş Bayraktar discussed the game therapy techniques and basic approaches in game therapies in the presentation she made, while she stated the importance of games in the development process of children. Expressing the place of game in the development process of children with the quotes said by famous people, Fatoş Bayraktar said the game therapy was among the most important methods for the children to be able to help each other. The therapist was needed to ask questions and lead children to game said Bayraktar adding that the children were aware of their problems; however they did not know how to solve and many problems could be got over with game therapy.
Enil Afşaroğlu: “Change is to make the person different or the teach how to resist to impulsions”
Expert Psychologist from Cyprus Neoma Psychotherapy Centre Enil Afşaroğlu gave information on the Gestalt therapy approach and when and how this approach would be interfered. The main objective of the Gestalt therapy was to realize symptoms of being bunged up in human behaviour, thought and emotions by experiments and observations and then beginning the treatment processes said Expert Psychologist Afşaroğlu, underlining that the treatment was needed to be advisor-focused.
Prof. Dr. Tanju Gürkan: “Effective communication is the most important point in preventing violence at school.”
Dean of GAU Faculty of Education Tanju Gürkan touched upon despotism, violence, anger and aggression and he expressed the reasons of violence that took place in schools. Stating that particularly family, TV, economical conditions, bad conditions and environment bring out the despotism in education, Gürkan said the rate of the students who were exposed to despotism was not insignificant and he underlined that it would affect the student psychologically and sociologically in the future. Gürkan pointed that everyone must have a responsibility in prevention of violence and despotism at school.
As. Prof. Dr. Tülin Bodamyalı: “Both sides can be exposed to despotism in relationships”
Vice Rector of GAU As. Prof. Dr. Tülin Bodamyalı discussed the despotism in romantic relationships. Both sides were needed to behave thoughtfully to each other in relationships said Tülin Bodamyalı, adding that emotional harassment took place more than physical harassment and it gives pain and harm in the same level, it was hard to cope with it and psychological problems would be created in the following ages.
Prof. Dr. Pınar Tınas: “Mobbing is a fact that can take place in all business places”
Prof. Dr. Pınar Tınas, one of the instructors of Marmara University mentioned the despotism that individuals are exposed in business places and she explained the Mobbing concept. Workers are psychologically affected with disturbing behaviours with mobbing that means psychological harassment at work Tınas said, expressing that such behaviours could be accepted with understanding once; however if they continue for a long time, it can be punished with sanctions by other workers.
