Acclaimed ceramics artist Ayhatun Ateşin was the guest of the week in the ‘Conversations with Artists’ event, held by GAU Faculty of Architecture in the framework of the Monday interviews.
Meeting with the students at the ‘Walked Way’ event at GAU Cyprus Karmi Campus Millennium Congress Hall, Ayhatun Ateşin talked with the students about her works and projects. The artist expressed that first she used fire as the main element in her works then she used water. Ateşin said her works are based on the division in the island and the ambiguity that has been continuing for many years.
Inspiration
The artist, who studied the strengthening of women’s universal rights with her ‘50 shoes project’, that received positive reactions around the world, showed her art work to the through reflector. Ateşin stated that different disciplines in the arts such as cinema and photography needed to be integrated with ceramics and she underlined that the artist needed to get excited about the process of turning clay into meaningful objects.
“I am affected with architectural deformations and inattentive stone walls. Everything affects us when we look around, our environment is our inspiration, changes must be in the arts and we have to keep up with the times, art is not constant; therefore we must avoid repetition.”
Ateşin answered questions at the end of the programme and was presented a 25th year flower by the Dean of the Faculty of Architecture As. Prof. Dr. Ayşe Zeynep Onur.
