GAU Higher School of Maritime and Transportation Celebrates World Maritime Day

Girne American University Principal of Higher School of Maritime and Transportation, Unlimited Master and an Engineer of Sea Transportation Management - Captain Efdal Safel has made the statement below regarding World Maritime Day:

“World Maritime Day was announced official following the decision of the International Maritime Organization’s proposal to the United Nations in 2005 and since then it has been celebrated on the last week of September every year. The aim is to emphasize sea and shipping commerce safety (cargo safety, sea safety and sea environment safety), providing coordination amongst countries in sea commerce and to stress the work of IMO in specific terms. The IMO Council is promoting the global celebrations of World Maritime Day other than in London. In this sense the celebrations last year were hosted in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon. This year the Day will be hosted by Morocco/Tangiers, following competition amongst many countries. This year’s theme for the World Maritime Day is “IMO Agreements: Effective Practice” and related brochures were published in this respect by the International Chamber of Sea Commerce.

In this sense, as the Principal of GAU Higher School of Maritime and Transportation, I congratulate the Day for all sailors and those who undertake relevant work at sea and wish that ICS will cooperate to keep the sea clean, educate students to be more sensitive in regard to the sea”  reported Safel.
