The Importance of Basic First Aid discussed at GAU

The Girne American University (GAU) Nautical Club organized a discussion entitled ‘The Importance of Basic First Aid’ with the participation of the Maritime and Transportation School, Faculty of Health Sciences, School of Nursing and Sports College students at the GAU Spectrum Congress Centre.

Assoc. Dr. Mira Rana Gökdoğan, Assoc. Dr. Tülin Bodamyalı, Dr. Mehmet Avcı, Assist. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Apak and Unlimited Master Efdal Safel participated as Speakers during the discussion.
The event commenced with the National Anthem and Silence followed by the speech of Assoc. Dr. Mira Rana Gökdoğan. Gökdoğan talked about the first aid that “we use unwittingly in daily life after explaining first aid to the students. The importance of composure was emphasized by giving examples of simple first aid to the students.”

Assoc. Dr. Tulin Bodamyalı explained the concept of emergency. After touching on the 'emergency' concept issue, she mentioned the shortcomings of emergency care in hospitals and the incorrect use of the units at emergency services. Then she reminded the students that they should behave conscientiously in this regard.

Dr. Mehmet Avcı, who is the President of Traffic Accident Prevention, briefed the students about the ambulance and emergency service units in Northern Cyprus and Turkey and reminded those present of the phone numbers that must be sought in case of emergency. He shared the development work that will be done on behalf of the ambulance services with the students. Avcı talked about some incidents and completed his speech by mentioning to students that being calm is the essential element in an emergency situation.

Assist. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Apak talked about the importance of first aid in sports. He remarked that it is important to avoid accidents in sports environments and explained how to avoid accidents with examples from various sports. Mr. Apak explained to the students that they need to pay attention while doing sports. He warned about paying attention especially to cooling and warming movements and explained the Rest, Ice practical, Compression and Elevation concepts which is called the R.I.C.E. rule in Sports.

Unlimited Master Efdal Safel talked about general first aid practices in the maritime area and shared with the students some of the experiences he had while working as a Captain. He mentioned that they ask for medical help through a satellite communication device in emergency situations while on board. He talked about the infirmary on the ships following the curiosity of students in other programs. Safel advised the students to create their own list of their intervention if possible to control everything they would do in such emergencies. He thanked the students for the sensitivity they showed to the panel.

The discussion ended after certificates of appreciation were presented to all of the Speakers who participated in the panel by the students of the Nautical Club.
