Girne American University (GAU) students continue to put their signatures on different social responsibility projects such as those who visited Dipkarpaz Primary School to paint the walls, much to the delight of the children. The students of the Turcology and Art and Handcrafts Clubs changed the atmosphere of the school by painting the inner and outer walls of the school over a three day period when they were hosted by the people of Karpaz.
Karpaz interest Dipkarpaz Primary School teachers and students helped the visitors to produce the paintings in the inner areas with larger paintings produced on the outer walls of the school producing a more pleasing environment in which students will study and learn.
The young children also helped to paint the cartoon figures drawn by the Instructor of GAU Art Club Esra Tohumcu. The project, which reflected the cartoons loved by the children, was watched by the Chairman of the GAU Board of Directors Serhat Akpınar, who said:
“The young children were aware of everything. The volunteers that were integrated with the children of Karpaz created a very nice work,” Serhat Akpınar said, “Such social responsibilities are important for children that are our future.”
Akpınar said that work was continuing on the new GAU Karpaz Campus and he stressed that GAU’s interest in the Karpaz region would increase. The authorities of Dipkarpaz Primary School thanked GAU and the volunteers for the social responsibility project.
Archaeological areas In the framework of the lesson on ‘The History of Cyprus and its Architecture’ GAU students visited archaeological remains in Kyrenia and made a preliminary study of places necessitating control. GAU decided to act after the areas previously cleaned by students began to be destroyed. First visiting Kyrenia’s archaeological areas the students aim to keep these areas under control and clean them regularly as part of the GAU Archaeology Club soon to be established. The students then visited both the old elephant and hippopotamus fossils near the old olive oil factory in Karaoğlanoğlu and the Bronze Age tombs in Karmi before moving on to visit the remains of older periods in Lapta and Çatalköy.
